This is me (red hood) and my boyfriend at a Prop 8 protest in West Hollywood on Wednesday, Nov. 5. We were walking along peacefully when some patrol cars pulled up. Two of the cops came toward us and began frisking us both. They didn#39;t state their reason for this until after they had completely searched every inch and taken everything out of our pockets (are they allowed to do that??). Eventually they asked us if we had a laser pointer. No, but the girl who was walking next to us did. Apparently she had pointed it at the helicopter that was circling above us, and I guess that#39;s a big no-no. The cops sure were quick to respond. And they were awfully forceful about the whole thing. We had a crowd around us taking pictures and videotaping. (Thank you to the girl who sent us this video.) One woman came up and started interrogating the cops asking them what their reason was for searching us. They wouldn#39;t tell her. She kept pressing, and eventually they threatened to take her to jail too if she didn#39;t step back.
I thought the whole thing was a bit over-dramatic. Was all this really necessary? I guess cops feel like if there#39;s a protest going on, no matter how peaceful, they need to arrest somebody for something.
A similar situation happened to me a couple years ago. I was stopped for riding my bike on the sidewalk (did you know that#39;s a misdemeanor?). They searched me, kept asking me if I had anything in my bag that quot;they should know aboutquot;, put me in the back of the cop car, searched my backpack, looked me up in the system... and THEN, after all that, they told me why they had stopped me. For riding my bike on the sidewalk. He said to me, quot;Give me one good reason why I shouldn#39;t take you to jail right now.quot; Because there are crimes being committed elsewhere as we speak and you#39;re wasting your time with me.
If I were head of a police department and one of my officers brought in someone for riding their bike on the sidewalk or for misusing a laser pointer, I would probably fire him. What is the crime rate in this city? And you#39;re wasting your time chasing after that?
Two words for cops -- power trip. [More] [Less]
